Biographical/Historical Note
Chattanooga University was founded in 1886. Three years later, it merged with East Tennessee Wesleyan University and the new institution adopted the name Grant University. In 1903, Grant University changed its name to University of Chattanooga. This school remained independent until 1969, when it merged with Chattanooga City College and the University of Tennessee to form the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga.
