Abstract

This collection contains correspondence written by Emerson H. Fly in his capacity of Vice President of Business and Finance for the University of Tennessee system. Among the subjects discussed are retirement plans for employees, budgetary planning, and university fiscal policies.

Biographical/Historical Note

Emerson H. Fly was born in Milan, Tennessee and earned a BA in Accounting from the University of Tennessee in 1961. He became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) the following year. Fly worked as a Junior Accountant for Price Waterhouse and Co. (1961-1962) before coming to the University of Tennessee. Here, he worked as an Assistant Auditor (1962-1968), an Internal Auditor (1968-1973), Vice Chancellor for Finance at Chattanooga (1973-1975), and Vice President for Business and Finance (1977-1991) before becoming the Executive Vice President at the Knoxville campus. Fly left this position in 2001 to serve a term as Acting (and later permanent) President of the University of Tennessee. Although Fly officially retired in 2002, he was called back to service as Interim Executive Vice President in 2003.
