Biographical/Historical Note

Sigma Xi: The Scientific Research Society was founded in 1886 at Cornell University by junior faculty member Frank van Vleck and a handful of graduate students to recognize excellence in scientific research. The Society's name is taken from its motto Spoudon Xynones, which translates as Companions in Zealous Research. Members of the non-profit honor society elect others on the basis of their research achievements or potential. Today, the society boasts over 60,000 members in more than 100 countries.
