Biographical/Historical Note
Barbara Blount was born to Territorial Governor William and Mary (Grainger) Blount on September 16, 1792. She is recognized as the nation's first co-ed and enrolled at Blount College (parent institution of the University of Tennessee) with four other women (Polly McClung, Jenny Armstrong, Mattie Kain, and Kittie Kain) in 1804. She married Edmund Pendleton Gaines (1777-1849) in 1815, and the couple had two known children: Mary and Edmund Jr. The family later moved to Mobile, Alabama, where Barbara Blount died on November 30, 1836. She has been memorialized at the University with Barbara Hill (now known simply as the Hill) and Barbara Blount Hall (razed in 1979).
