Biographical/Historical Note
Graduate study was initially instituted in 1872. Requirements for various departmental graduate programs were accepted by the board of trustees on February 15, 1879. A graduate department was formally established in 1912. It evolved into the Graduate School in 1949, and was dismantled during a restructuring in 2000. Most graduate programs were transferred to individual departments and colleges. The Graduate School was reestablished in 2006, and used the title of dean for the first time. Dr. Carolyn Hughes was the first person to hold the title at the Graduate School.
