Abstract

This collection houses invitations, programs, correspondence, news clippings, and certificates of recognition documenting the investiture of Jimmy G. Cheek as the University of Tennessee's seventh Chancellor on May 1, 2009.

Biographical/Historical Note

Jimmy Geary Cheek was born in Gorman, Texas to Geary B. and Mayme (Wright) Cheek on September 7, 1946. He earned his BS (1969) and PhD (1975) from Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University and his MEd from Lamar University (1972). Cheek began his academic career as a Professor of Agriculture at the University of Florida, where he subsequently served as Assistant Dean for Academy Programs for the College of Agriculture (1992-1999), Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (1999-2004), and Senior Vice President for Agriculture and Natural Resources (2005-2009). On May 1, 2009 Cheek became the University of Tennessee's seventh Chancellor. He is married to Ileen (Griffith) Cheek, and they have two children.
