Biographical/Historical Note
Dr. John Wilkinson Cates of Maryville, Tennessee was born April 7, 1833. He graduated from Maryville College in 1851. Cates attended Nashville Medical School, and he started his own practice in 1857 in Maryville. He served as a Confederate Army surgeon during the Civil War. Following the war, he returned to his Maryville practice and was also instrumental in starting the Bank of Blount County. He died January 24, 1916 and is buried in Blount County, Tenn.
