Biographical/Historical Note
John Harrison was born on February 20, 1835 in Rockingham County, Virginia to Daniel Harrison (1807-1871) and Rhoda M. (Brown) Harrison (1808-1844). Around 1858, John Harrison and Hiram Bowman acquired land and a small corn mill in Jefferson County, Tennessee. By 1860, they built a three-story grist mill called Stony Bluff that was later renamed Island Ford Mills. John Harrison married Mary Emily Rankin (1835-1919) in 1865. The two had at least eight children: Arabelle Harrison (1866-1953), Helen Harrison, Sarah Ellen Harrison (1870-1962), Ida Adaline (Harrison) Blackburn (1872-1942), Lydia (Harrison) Moore (1874-1964), Arthur Early Harrison (1877-1953), John Marshall Harrison (1879-1899), and Emett Harrison (1882-1960). John Harrison died on February 17, 1921 and is buried in Shady Grove Cemetery in Dandridge, Tennessee.
