Abstract

James R. Delaunay collected these autographs from fellow prisoners of war while he was incarcerated in Johnson's Island, Ohio from December of 1864 to June of 1865. This item is a transcription of the original booklet, which was then in the possession of the Collierville Herald.

Biographical/Historical Note

James R. Delaunay was born in Georgia on October 10, 1842. Although the cover of this transcription indicates that Delaunay served with Company F of the 58th Tennessee Infantry (CSA), it is considerably more likely that he was a part of Company I of the 38th Tennessee Infantry (CSA). He enlisted on March 5, 1862 in Morning Sun, Tennessee and saw action at Shiloh and Perryville before being captured near Nashville on December 16, 1864. He was sent to Johnson's Island in Ohio by way of Louisville, Kentucky. After swearing an oath of allegiance on June 16, 1865 Delaunay was released and returned to Tennessee. He died on June 21, 1908.
