I. C. Brown Day Book
This collecton contains a small ledger with handwritten records of visits and medical care by I.C. Brown, who worked as a physician for the early years of his career in Philadelphia, Tennessee. The ledger lists names, visit summaries and brief treament descriptions, and prices charged. Visits are listed by date, then the name of the person requesting treatment or possibly the head of household, followed in parentheses by the relation of the patient to the named person; for example, William Smith (wife). A number of entries list (negro), indicating either enslaved persons or possibly free people of color living within a household. There are several political newspaper clippings glued into the book, obscuring the records on those pages.

Biographical / Historical
Ignatius Cyprian (I.C.) Brown was born March 10, 1835, in Monroe County, Tennessee Thomas and Jane McDowell Patton Brown. Though the oldest of ten children, little is known about Brown’s childhood. On the 1860 census he is listed at age 25 as living with his father, a clergyman, and his mother and siblings in Sweetwater, Tennessee.
After attending Maryville College in Blount County, Tennessee, Brown began practicing medicine as early as 1860. He worked in Philadelphia, TN until moving to Danville, Indiana in 1863. In February 1864. Brown married Ruth A. Hamlet in Hendricks, Indiana, and the couple moved to Columbus City, Iowa later in 1864, where they lived for two years before relocating to Clinton, Iowa. After another two years, the Browns moved to Columbus Junction, Iowa, where they lived and Dr. Brown practiced until his death. The couple had four children: Octavia, William, Harry, and the youngest son Hadley, who followed in his father’s footsteps and became a doctor.
Dr. I.C. Brown died on March 21, 1900, after a week-long bout with pneumonia, and is buried in Columbus Junction, Iowa.
