Abstract
This collections contains a small notebook with the records of the estate of J. W. Brown of McMinn County, Tennessee after his death in 1870. The records continue into 1878.
Biographical / Historical
J. W. Brown was born Josiah George Washington Brown in Tennessee on September 14, 1821, to William and Anne Taylor Brown. While his birthplace is unconfirmed, his parents were married in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1816. Throughout his life, Brown went by George, Washington, Wash, or the initials J.W., but was never listed as Josiah.
In August 1861, Brown married his first wife, Martha M. J. Weir, and the two had several children before her death. Brown married again sometime between 1860 and 1870 to Nancy R. Coffey, and at his death he had at least six living children, and at least another four who had died, one the same year as he. Brown was a farmer with a substantial amount of property and money when he died, and in his will he named six of his children, his wife, and a granddaughter as heirs. Brown died July 17, 1870 in Riceville, McMinn County, Tennessee, and is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Sanford.
