This collection houses seven volumes of ledgers, journals, and sales records documenting the activities of the Morris Bart Firm.
Biographical/Historical Note
Morris Bart was born on June 22, 1875 in Chechenova, Russia (later part of Poland). He emigrated to the United States in 1884 and eventually settled in Knoxville. He managed the prominent Morris Bart Firm on Gay Street, which specialized in ladies' ready-to-wear clothing. Bart married Rosie (1883-1913) of Chechenova in 1902. The two had one child, Flora (Bart) Brody (1903-1995). Rosie Bart died in 1913 at the age of 29, and Morris Bart remarried in 1914 to Sadie Margolies. The two had one son, Morris Bart, Jr. (1915-2011). Morris Bart died on March 3, 1943 in Knoxville and is buried in the New Jewish Cemetery with his first wife.
