Abstract
This collection houses six volumes of incorporation papers, stock certificates, meeting minutes, purchase records, and sales records documenting the activities of the M. M. Newcomer Company between 1907 and 1926.
Biographical/Historical Note
Morris Martin Newcomer was born on October 3, 1863 to William and Catharine Newcomer in Pennsylvania. He married Lucy Fichthorn Wright (1862-1932) on November 22, 1883 in Reading, Pennsylvania. Morris and Lucy had one child, Clara Adele (Newcomer) Pierce (1884-1974). The couple moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where Morris operated a store. In October 1907, Newcomer, Charles F. Young, William A. McBath, William E. Dunford, and John O. Tilley formed the M. M. Newcomer Company. This organization expanded Newcomer's original enterprise. M. M. Newcomer Company remained in business until 1932, when it was replaced by Knox Dry Goods. Morris Newcomer died on July 26, 1936, in Dallas, Texas, and is buried at the Laurel Land Memorial Park in Dallas.
