This letter was written on March 22, 1844, by Spencer Jarnagin in Washington City to W.H. Thompson, Esq of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The letter details the account of Jarnagin receiving a letter from Thompson requiring a payment of 50 dollars. Jarnagin then proceeds to pay by check number 6539, dated March 22, 1844, a sum that may be retrieved at North American Bank in Philadelphia. He assures Thompson that there is no objection to the sum paid and informs him that his old acquaintances, General Jacobs and Hugh S. McClung are in town and may be traveling to Philadelphia soon.

Abstract

Thompson that his old acquaintances are in town and may be leaving for Philadelphia soon.

Biographical/Historical Note

Spencer Jarnagin was a United States Senator from Tennessee, born in 1792 and lived until June 25, 1853, where he died in Memphis. A graduate of Greenville College, he studied and practiced law, then bcoming a part of the Tennessee Senate from 1833 to 1835. He was then elected to serve as United States Senator by the Whigs in 1843, serving until 1847. He was not re-elected, instead replaced by John Bell, and Jarnagin returned to practicing law.
