Biographical/Historical Note
Henry McCalley was born on February 11, 1852 in Huntsville, Alabama. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1876. In the summer of 1877, McCalley became a volunteer assistant for the Geological Survey of Alabama; the following year, McCalley joined the Department of Chemistry at the University of Alabama, where he stayed until 1883 while continuing to serve as a volunteer assistant for the Geological Survey. His research focused on the river valleys of the state, especially the Tennessee River Valley in northern Alabama. McCalley died of pneumonia on November 21, 1904.
