Dr. W. S. Austin used this ledger to document his work as a physician in Knoxville, Tennessee between 1905 and 1918, including some transactions made through the Tennessee Medical College and records of his salary. Also included is an index to the ledger organized by patient surname.

Biographical/Historical Note

William Sidney Austin was born in Tennessee on November 21, 1874. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's Department of Medicine in 1899 and settled in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he was affiliated with St. Mary's Hospital, Knoxville General Hospital, and Fort Sanders Hospital. He also served as the second Vice President of the Tennessee Medical College Medical and Surgical Society, represented Tennessee at the 1908 International Congress on Tuberculosis, served as the Medical Inspector for Knoxville's schools, and worked as an Associate Surgeon for the Southern Railway and the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. Austin died of leukemia in Knoxville, Tennessee on April 10, 1950.
