This collection contains a transcription of a letter written by Pyrrhus Joseph (P.J.) Neil, in 1868, to his father, John Harvey McKinley Neil while P.J. was a student at Blount College. In the letter, P.J. writes how much he is enjoying going to school at Blount College and how attentive his professors were to him. The image at the bottom of the letter is of P.J.'s grandfather, along with two brothers, who came to Knox County from Ireland in the late 1700's.

Abstract

This collection contains a transcription of a letter written by Pyrrhus Joseph (P.J.) Neil, in 1868, to his father, John Harvey McKinley Neil while P.J. was a student at East Tennessee University. The image at the bottom of the letter is of P.J.'s grandfather, along with two brothers, who came to Knox County from Ireland in the late 1700's.

Biographical/Historical Note

Pyrrhus Joseph Neil was born on February 2, 1848, outside of Knoxville. After the Civil War P.J. was sent to live with his uncle in Knoxville and attended East Tennessee University. After he completed his education, he married and settled in Knox County. After the death of his first wife and child, he moved to Morgan County where he met his second wife, a young Cherokee girl named Isadora Jane Brient. He remained in Sunbright, Tennessee until his death on April 14, 1914.
