Biographical/Historical Note

The Philomathian (or Philomathean) Society at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee, was a literary society founded at the school in 1844. Although membership was open to anyone enrolled at the school, the Philomathian Society was mostly comprised of law students. Along with other literary societies, the Philomathian Society served as a source of social activities for the students. Members engaged in debates, lectures, and other activities. The society's motto was "Nihil Sine Labore," Latin for "Nothing without work."
