Also included are a letter that White wrote to his father from California in 1852 and a letter that Joseph Estabrook enclosed with R. L. White's school report.

Biographical/Historical Note

Richard Lawson White was born to Thomas and Jane (Young) White in about 1825 in Tennessee. He attended East Tennessee University during the 1840s and later settled in Sacramento County, California, where he most likely died between 1870 and 1880.

Acquisition Note

Neal O'Steen and Cheryl L. McLemore Towns donated these items to the University of Tennessee's Archives in 1977 and 1986 respectively.
