Abstract
This collection houses two documents dating from the early 1800s describing Thomas Humes's land holdings in Knox County near the French Broad River.
Biographical/Historical Note
Thomas Humes was born in Northern Ireland in 1768. He emigrated to the United States as a child and lived with his brother in Pennsylvania before moving to Knoxville in 1795 to start a mercantile business. Humes married Margaret Christian Russell Cowan (1777-1854) around 1802, and the couple had five children who survived to adulthood: John N., Mary (died 1826), Elizabeth (born 1809), Thomas William (1815-1892), and Andrew Russell (1817-1847). Humes died in Knoxville on September 23, 1816, and is buried in the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
