This collection contains papers documenting the World War II service of Carroll G. Wright. Included are five letters written from Wright to his wife Elaine; a telegram to Elaine declaring Wright missing in action, and a copy of a newspaper article regarding Wright’s missing-in-action status and likelihood of death following the attack on his ship, the USS Franklin.

Biographical / Historical
Carroll George Wright was born to George B. and Nellie Pearl Kirk Wright of Union City, Tennessee in 1913. Before entering military service on March 29, 1944, he was employed by the Standard Coffee Co. During the war, he served as storekeeper 3rd class on the USS Franklin in the U.S. Navy. Wright fought in the Leyte, Palau, and Luzon campaigns. He was reported missing on March 19, 1945, after his ship was hit by a Japanese plane. He remained missing for more than a month before being declared killed in action. Wright was married to Mary Elaine Campbell (1913-2009).
