Abstract

This collection houses land deeds, genealogical notes, and other papers documenting Thomas Hopkins (1764-1836) and his family in Tennessee.

Biographical/Historical Note

Thomas Hopkins was born in Goochland County, Virginia to John and Mary (Martin) Hopkins on May 15, 1764. He was one twelve children, including Judith (Hopkins) Vaughn, Jeannie (Hopkins) Rodes, Arthur, John, Henry, Molly (Hopkins) French, James, William, Bettie Pettit (Hopkins) Richardson, George Washington, and Ann Sparks (Hopkins) Horsley. Thomas Hopkins emigrated to Tennessee in about 1808 and worked as a land speculator, eventually amassing extensive holdings in Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Arkansas, Texas, and Mississippi. He apparently pursued this career nearly to the exclusion of all else; indeed, he is said to have never married because he forgot to appear on his wedding day. Hopkins died in Tennessee on March 26, 1836 and is buried near McMinnville, Tennessee.
