Scope and Contents From the Collection: The U.S. Army Provost Marshal's Office Pass Collection contains a pass allowing civilian James Dickinson to travel across military lines in 1862 to purchase necessary items for the use of his family. These passes were given by the federal government, at the discretion of the Provost Marshal's Office, to those who swore an oath of allegiance to the Union and agreed not to use the goods obtained through use of the pass for profit.
