Scope and Contents Note From the Collection: This collection contains the diary of John Page, a member of a Nile expedition headed by Lord Abercromby. Dated October 23, 1857 to February 16, 1858, the journal is 41 pages long, with approximately 10,000 words and titled, Nile Journal 1857-58. The diary covers the expedition from Alexandria to Cairo and, eventually, up the Nile. It is a narrative of place, people, ancient culture, as well as contemporary customs, daily events, and occurrences during the trip. There are no private thoughts...

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection: This collection contains a letter, dated June 23, 1892, by Charles Chaillé-Long, an American soldier and a member of Charles Gordon’s staff in the Egyptian Equatoria province. The letter is to British explorer and abolitionist Samuel White Baker, Gordon’s predecessor as Governor-General of Equatoria. This collection contains 47 photographs of temples and antiquities located in Upper Egypt, including over 30 images of the Egyptian temples of Karnak, Luxor, Thebes, Philae and Abu Simbel. Also included are general views and close-ups of architectural details, statues, or bas-reliefs.

Occasionally, the images feature the region's native inhabitants, ancient structures still in modern use, and ships - including Egyptian dahabiyas and steamships - on the Nile.

Throughout the photographs are the native inhabitants of Egypt but including the Bedouins, seen on their horses and camels, herding sheep and camels and often with large families.
