This collection houses a map of Tennessee (including insets of Nashville and Knoxville) labeled in German and published in Meyer's Handatlas (1848). Of particular interest is the scale, which provides distance measurements in twelve different units: geographical miles, English miles, French leagues, Spanish leagues, Portuguese leagues, Italian miles, Danish miles, Swedish miles, Russian versts, Greek miles, Turkish miles, and nautical miles.

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection: This collection consists of ten letters and five envelopes from Union soldier William Styer to his wife Susannah (Defenbaugh) Styer dating from 1862 November 12 to 1863 September 5. One letter was written in Camp Morton, Indiana; one was written on board the Ohio Belle; and the rest were written from Fort Pickering, Tennessee. Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

This collection houses a letter from an unidentified Civil War soldier to his brother George. In it, the author details his concerns about the state of education and poverty in East Tennessee's small towns. He also mentions that the women he has encountered love to dance and that many of them use snuff. Finally, he describes the area around Cleveland where he is encamped and says a little about military affairs.
