Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

This collection consists primarily of receipts and correspondence documenting Gideon Cate's general store in Blountville, Tennessee between 1837 and 1889. Also included is a photograph of the building Cate's business was housed in, several land deeds showing how Cate expanded his holdings, and Cate's phrenological profile. Additionally, the collection houses a photograph of a sophomore botany class at the University of Tennessee and a receipt of funds from Nathaniel Hart, dated from 1797.

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

James H. Ewing wrote this fictional letter from Miss Gracie Sue Ellen Davenport of Knoxville, Tennessee to Franklin Percival Ewing for Dr. Cooke's American Theatre History Class in 1977. Supposedly dated February 25, 1875, the letter discusses the opening of the Staub Opera House on October 1, 1872.

Gideon Welles Letter to A. H. Rice, 1866 June 20

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

In this letter, Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles asks Congressman Alexander H. Rice (then serving on the Committee of Naval Affairs) to consider passing an amendment to secure equal payment for the clerical force of the Navy Yards. Welles mentions three reports of the Chief of the Bureau of Yards and Docks, which are not included in this collection.

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection: This collection consists of six letters written by Horace Maynard between 1861 and 1873. The first, dated December 17, 1861 and addressed to D. S. Dickerman, discusses Dickerman's recent loss of contact with Tennessee. The second, dated January 2, 1863 and addressed to an unknown recipient, indicates that the recipient should speak with Return J. Meigs for further information. The third, dated December 8, 1866 and addressed to W. H. Jones, concerns bonds issued by the State of Tennessee. ...
