W. A. Cobb Letter
This collection consists of a letter dated April 6 from W. A. Cobb in Medon, Tennessee, to Miss Mollie.
W. B. Lewis Letter
In this letter, W. B. Lewis relates news about several friends and family members, mentions that cholera is still afflicting Nashville and the surrounding areas, asks Jackson to pass some news to Ralph E. W. Earl, and complains that [t]imes in Nashville are exceedingly dull and hard. He closes by asking after General Eaton (who he thinks should come to Nashville because the Foster and Grundy parties are waxing very hot) and sending his respects to Jackson's family.
W. Bannister Account Book
This collection contains an account book belonging to W. Bannister, a blacksmith in Chattanooga, Tenn., from the years 1893 to 1896.
W. C. Cochran Photographs of the Great Smoky Mountains
W. C. Cochran took these 89 photographs during August and September of 1886. The majority of the images depict areas that were later incorporated into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park including Chilhowee Range, Nebo Mountain, and Miller's Cove.
W. C. Robinson Collection of Scopes Trial Photographs
This collection houses 104 photographs, two reel-to-reel audio tapes, and two cassette tapes (content is identical to the reel-to-reel tapes) documenting the Scopes Trial of 1925.
W. D. Carnes Letter
In a March 23, 1861 letter to his children, W. D. Carnes, then president of Franklin College in Franklin, Tennessee, writes of an illness sweeping through the school, fundraising activities, and news of three students who were "violent Secessionists" leaving the school.
W. D. Cox Medical Ledger
W. Dwight Reinhardt Letter
W. Dwight Reinhardt's July 8, 1862 letter to Sarah Blackburn in Yadkin County, North Carolina, discusses that the 23rd Tennessee Regiment (CSA) will soon move from Tupelo, Mississippi into Tennessee. Reinhardt also passes along stories of skirmishes fought by the 4th North Carolina.
W. E. (Bill) Warde Memoir
This collection contains W. E. (Bill) Warde's updated version of his memoir, "My Military Service," which covers his time on the front lines in the European Theater during World War II (1944-1946). He recounts his experiences in various battles, gives details about the movements of his unit, and tells about what he describes as the "worst night of [his] life" when his fellow soldiers were captured and killed in Germany.
W. E. Gillenwaters Letter
Collection contains a brief note from Principal Keeper W. E. Gillenwaters to the Chief of Police in Dallas, Texas in hopes that he may be able to aid in the capture of the escaped convict #3531, Enos Briggs, who escaped from the Tennessee State Prison on January 31, 1908.
W. G. Brownlow Article
William G. Brownlow, publisher and editor of Brownlow’s Knoxville Whig, published this article in his newspaper on June 17, 1868. The piece, titled the "McMinn County Manifesto," refers to two articles published in Samuel P. Ivins’ Athens Post on October 3 and 10, 1862.
W. G. Holmes Letter to S. E. Hunt
In this letter to Sarah E. Hunt, W. G. Holmes (business manager of the Memphis Commercial Appeal) describes the history of morning newspapers in Memphis beginning with the foundation of the Appeal in 1840 and ending with the consolidation of the city's two major daily newspapers, the Appeal Avalanche and the Commercial, as the Commercial Appeal in 1894. Holmes closes with an outline of the features that make Memphis an ideal location for a morning newspaper.
W. G. McAdoo Diary
In this diary, W. G. McAdoo describes his service in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), including his company's participation in the invasion of Mexico's eastern coast, the Mexican landscape, his encounters with the local population, troop movements, and the Battle of Vera Cruz (March 1847). This manuscript is a bound typescript of the original document.
W. Gibbs McAdoo Letter
This letter penned by W. Gibbs McAdoo, written November 8, 1860, describes the mood in Knoxville, after Abraham Lincoln's election. McAdoo also tells of an incident in which someone tied a tin bucket and a note reading "Going out of the Union" to a dog and turned it loose on Gay Street.
W. H. Rogers Collection
W. L. Brown Journal
This collection consists of a handwritten journal belonging to W. L. Brown. The journal includes personal accounts of the author's life, lists about purchases and expenses, income, weather, and local marriages. The journal also contains a few receipts, newspaper clippings, and other loose notes.
W. L. Salsbury Letter
A letter written from W. L Salsbury at Hurricane Bridge, Tenn., to his wife, dated August 4, 1864. Salsbury writes that he will soon be coming home from his service, and passes along news regarding his company.
W. M. Creamer Letter
This collection consists of a letter, dated February 24, 1863 from Camp Cripplecrick, Tenn., from W. M. Creamer of the 90th Ohio Infantry to his cousin, M. C. Creamer. The author discusses his religious beliefs as well as Captain Robert O. Caddy's treatment of sick young boys in Nashville.
