William Edwards Letter

Abstract William Edwards wrote this letter to his cousin Jennie Searce from camp near Battle Creek, Tennessee on August 9, 1862. In it, Edwards says "we have to quit writing until they get old morgan cleaned out of Kentucky" (referring to John Hunt Morgan) and mentions that his unit has been eating poorly because they have had to ration provisions. William F. Baggerman World War II Papers

Abstract

This collection contains the personal correspondence, memorabilia, and newspaper clippings of William F. Baggerman during his career in the United States Army Air Corps during World War Two. Most of the collection is correspondence between Baggerman and his family, comprised of concerns for family business and the situation at home. The collection spans from early in basic training until the end of the war.

William F. Bopp Papers

Overview

This collection includes a 20-page typescript personal narrative of William Bopp’s experiences in World War II. Written in 1990, Bopp recounts his beginnings and training with the military, his experiences overseas in Europe during the war, through his discharge in 1945 and return home.

Also included is a copy of Bopp’s honorable discharge certificate from 1945, and a copy of the “Company A Newsletter” from September 1991 for which Bopp authored the main text.

William G. Brownlow Circular

Brownlow published this circular for the "Loyal Men of Tennessee" to protest the appointment of General Longstreet as Surveyor of Customs for the Port of New Orleans and to refute Andrew Johnson's suggestion that he had received funds from Johnson to start a Union newspaper in Knoxville.

In this letter, Parson Brownlow reports that he has just returned to Cincinnati (where he lived while in exile from East Tennessee) from Louisville and Frankfort. He also mentions that he has been sick with a bilious attack and states that he has received about twenty tickets in response to our letters.

William G. Brownlow Letter

Abstract

This collection contains a letter from William G. "Parson" Brownlow, dated June 15, 1863, to Colonel Truesdail, Chief of Army Police. Brownlow, then serving as an Assistant Special Agent for the Treasury Department, discusses the trade of cotton and the seizure of nine casks of Bacon belonging to an Alabama Rebel.

William G. Swan Broadside

Abstract

William G. Swan published this broadside to assure voters that he was a candidate for the Second Judicial Circuit. He was not able to actively campaign because he had been home with his dying brother, and he couldn’t announce in the local political papers because he wasn’t friends with either editor, hence this broadside.

William G. Williams Report on Cherokee Territory

Abstract The bulk of this collection consists of a photocopied 35-page report describing a topographical survey of present-day Polk, Monroe, and McMinn counties in Tennessee.
