The collection contains extensive correspondence and other material related to the career of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut from 1830-1870. Subsequent materials include correspondence from the Admiral's wife Virginia, his father George, and his son Loyall. This collection also contains genealogical information about the Farragut family as well as newspaper clippings and articles about the Admiral.

Abstract

This letter, dated September 14, 1864 and signed D. G. Farragut, was written on board Farragut's flagship Hartford while it was anchored at Mobile Bay, Alabama. Addressed to Commodore Jason G. Palmer, it consists of an order to change the names of three vessels.

This collection contains two letters sent to David Glasgow Farragut while he was serving on the MS Flag Ship Hartford. They are dated 1863 and 1864. The letter dated 1864 concerns the appraisal of a schooner captured by the Estella.

David Henley Letter to Richard Harrison

Abstract

In this letter, David Henley reports that he has "forwarded Crozier and King's accounts for sundry articles of merchandize furnished for the Indian and Quarter Masters Departments and for the use of my office from April to December 1798." In all, the men are owed $451.99, which may be paid to their attorney, Samuel Meeker.

Abstract

These six documents show David Henley's appointment and service as an Agent of the United States Department of War in the Territory South of the River Ohio from 1793 to 1797. Among the subjects they discuss are pay for the militia stationed in Henley's vicinity, military procurement, the sale of two enslaved individuals, and the actions of local Native Americans.

Abstract This manuscript bill for $31.00 was prepared on behalf of N. H. S. Fournier, physician to Chickasaw, and is signed by David Henley (in the paymaster’s hand). An additional note indicates that the bill was received in Knoxville on February 6, 1797. Among the charges listed are 12 visits to L. Thompson, a Chickasaw Chief affected with violent dysentery, dated November 10-20, 1796; 11 visits to the Daughter of Opoie Mingo (Chickasaw Chief) in an inflammatory [sic] Fever, dated November 11-19,...

David L. Jones Letters

The David L. Jones Letters, 1865, consists primarily of letters between Private Jones (19th Pennsylvania Cavalry) and his wife Anna. He details his hardships, adventures, and views of the war, while Anna responds with letters about the homefront, explaining the hardtimes of having to take care of the couple's five children on her own during a time of poverty. The majority of Private Jones's letters were written from Nashville, Tenn.; Anna's were written from Alleghany City, Pa.
