Reminiscences of the Civil War and Newspaper Articles

Abstract

T. J. Walker's handwritten, 98-page manuscript chronicles the time he spent with the 9th Tennessee Infantry between approximately 1861 and 1865. During his service, Walker was wounded five times and contracted dysentery and typhoid at Corinth, Mississippi.

Robert M. McIntire Collection of Confederate Material

Abstract

This collection consists of an autograph book of Confederate officers' signatures, compiled by Captain Robert M. McIntire while a prisoner of war at Johnson's Island in Lake Erie from 1863 to 1865. The collection also includes a twenty dollar bill issued by the Confederate States of America, two postcards featuring a silhouette of General Robert E. Lee on his horse Traveler, one postcard featuring The Only Confederate Drum Corps In Existence, and a Confederate battle flag pin.

Samuel K. Carrigan Letter

This collection consists of a letter from Samuel K. Carrigan, sent on May 25, 1862 from Camp Mag Hill near Chattanooga, to his brother William A. Carrigan in Society Hill, South Carolina. He discusses his discontent with his fellow solider's irreligiousness and his desire to transfer into another unit, as well as the fighting in which he was involved.

Abstract

This collection consists of a bound, handwritten, and illustrated memoir, written by W. J. Worsham, recording the history of the Old 19th Tennessee Regiment of the Confederate States of America, which was based in Knoxville, Tennessee. The book was dedicated in 1902 to the survivors and fallen soldiers of the regiment, according to a written note from the author.

Thomas C. McInturff Letter

Abstract

Thomas C. McInturff wrote this letter to his father in East Tennessee from Camp Crawford in Vicksburg, Mississippi on February 19, 1863. In it, he discusses his and Sam's health, asks his father to settle some affairs on his behalf, complains that the food and the weather are both very poor, and states that he believes that Vicksburg is the nastiest place on earth. A notation at the end of the letter indicates that it was written by a friend B. F. F.

This collection is a diary written by William A. Mayo of Monroe County, Tennessee between the years 1861 and 1866. This Confederate pay voucher, written on Form No. 3 (Officers Pay Account), documents Captain William Jennings' pay from September 1, 1862 through November 28, 1862. Captains were paid $140.00 per month, so Jennings received a total of $410.67 for his service during this period. Receipt of delivery signed on the pay voucher places Captain Jennings in Knoxville, Tennessee on April 13, 1863.
