Union Soldier's Letter from Knoxville
In an October 29, 1863 letter to his friends and family at home in New Hampshire, John, a Union soldier in Knoxville, writes of traveling through East Tennessee.
W. Gibbs McAdoo Letter
The W. Gibbs McAdoo letter, written November 8, 1860, describes the mood in Knoxville, Tenn., after Lincoln's election. He also tells of an incident in which someone tied a tin bucket and a note reading "Going out of the Union" to a dog and turned it loose on Gay Street.
Wartburg (Tenn.) Collection
The Wartburg (Tenn.) Collection, 1864-1925 (bulk 1864-1896), contains numerous letters to residents of or regarding life in Wartburg, Tenn. (Morgan County). All of these documents except for the single letter from 1925 are written in German. Some of the topics covered include Civil War-era Chattanooga (letter dated March 29, 1864), the Southern Express Company of Knoxville (November 6, 1868), and alcohol production and prices (many of the letters from the 1880s and 1890s).
Wiley L. Morgan Papers
This collection consists of Wiley L. Morgan's university materials, photographs, sketches, identification card, and a certificate. In the collection are his report cards from grade school and the University of Tennessee, college essays, thesis, photographs, Appalachian Expedition identification pass, and a certificate from the American Flag House and Betsy Ross Memorial Association.
William E. Bryan Account Book
Account book for a general store located in Henry Crossroads, Tennessee. Dates in the book run from 1831 to 1848. Also includes what appears to be handwriting practice, probably from William Bryan's children.
William Graham Ledger Book
This collection contains a ledger book of William Graham of East Tennessee, dated 1857-1863. Entries include records of business transactions, monies spent, slaves bought and sold, county bonds owned (in Washington and Jefferson Counties), notes owned, private land sales, and settlement of accounts.
Wolf Creek Papers
This collection documents the Allen family and, to a lesser degree, the Peck family of Wolf Creek, Cocke County, Tennessee. Materials consist primarily of correspondence in the form of personal letters, envelopes, telegraphs, and postcards. In addition, there are wills, legal and business papers, newspaper clippings, photocopies, photographs, negatives, a glass negative, a book, an herb/wildflower journal, several periodicals, land deeds, and surveys.
