William G. Swan Broadside

Abstract

William G. Swan published this broadside to assure voters that he was a candidate for the Second Judicial Circuit. He was not able to actively campaign because he had been home with his dying brother, and he couldn’t announce in the local political papers because he wasn’t friends with either editor, hence this broadside.

William G. Williams Report on Cherokee Territory

Abstract The bulk of this collection consists of a photocopied 35-page report describing a topographical survey of present-day Polk, Monroe, and McMinn counties in Tennessee. It is written in narrative style and includes observations and a sketched map of the area. Also included are three photocopied letters, one to John James Albert from William George Williams, one to Colonel William C. Lindsay (incomplete), and one to an unnamed commander from General Zachary Taylor to tell him of Captain...

This collection contains a copy of a newspaper account book, A Narrative of the Life, Travels, and Circumstances Incidents Thereto of William G. Brownlow, and two bonds signed by Brownlow. The narrative appears to have suffered water damage and many parts are faded or illegible.

William Gibbs McAdoo Diary Extracts

Abstract

Two versions of William Gibbs McAdoo's diary documenting his life from 1846 to 1894. McAdoo wrote this diary and series of letters during the Mexican War, Civil War, and through his later years until 1894. Volume 1 is the draft version of the compilation of these extracts and Volume 2 is the final version.

William Gibbs McAdoo Letter to Ben W. Austin

Abstract

In this letter, William Gibbs McAdoo reports that he is sending Ben Austin a photograph of himself, three sonnets he has written, and an address by Mrs. Bell Barry of Knoxville. Additionally, he promises to send Austin a photograph of and some representative works by his wife at a later date and offers to transmit sections from the diary he kept during the Mexican War. Austin intended to publish these items as part of an upcoming literary collection.

This collection contains a ledger book of William Graham of East Tennessee, dated 1857-1863. Overview

This collections contains four photographs and and a few documents regarding William Ettinger and his military service in World War II with the 161st Signal Photographic Company. Three of the photographs contain captions and show Ettinger in New Guinea in 1943 with his film and photography equipment. The documents are photocopies and include identification cards and passes.

William H. Green Letter

Abstract

This letter by William H. Green, of the 45th New York Regiment, Company F, was written to his brother, from Nashville, Tenn. on February 16, 1865. In the letter, Green writes of a large battle that took place between the Rebel General Hood and the Union General Thomas. He also states that the city is under martial law.

William H. Gripman Letter

Abstract

This Civil War letter written by Union soldier William H. Gripman to his friends describes the conditions in Chattanooga, where his regiment was stationed in 1865. The letter is dated March 1, 1865. He describes how bad the officers are and how they got rid of an officer that hung one of the boys up by his thumbs.

William H. Jesse Tribute

This collection consists of two copies of a memorial composed for William H. Jesse after his death in 1970. It includes a brief obituary, a tribute written by University of Tennessee President Andy Holt, and a tribute written by Jesse's Secretary Daphne Townsend.

William H. Lambert Letter

Abstract

William H. Lambert wrote this letter to George and Jesse Cox of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 24 February 1863 while he was stationed in Lookout Valley, Tennessee. In it, Lambert discusses the bureaucratic processes of discharge and resignation. He also mentions that he has been promoted from Adjutant to Captain and recounts meeting a friend, Colonel Joseph B. Palmer, who he had not seen since the Battle of Antietam in Chattanooga the previous week.

William H. Polk Letter

Abstract

This collection consists of a single letter written by William H. Polk on May 17, 1843 regarding the prospects of his political party in the upcoming election. The letter, which is marked private, was written from Columbia. In it, Polk discusses the results of canvassing in Western and Middle Tennessee. He predicts that his party will gain three to seven members in the Legislature in the western counties and surpass the Whig Party in Middle Tennessee.

William H. Stokes Bill of Sale for Enslaved Family

Abstract

In this bill of sale, dated August, 1850, William H. Stokes transfers his ownership of a family of five enslaved people to L. Cook and R. B. Hanley of the firm of Cook & Hanley in Shelby County, Tenn. The family consists of Charles, aged 26 or 27 years; Anna, aged 20 years; and three children, Nelly, about 4 years old, Betty about 3 years old, and a female infant.
