Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

Sergeant B. W. Morse wrote this 13 page letter to his father from St. Julien, France on November 24, 1918. He assures his father that he is still alive and kicking and anxious to be in the U.S.A. Because Morse was writing weeks after the Armistice, he is able to divulge small amounts of information about his travels and service. He mentions submarine movements and depth bombs, but concentrates on his desire to return home and spend Christmas with his family.

It notes that Willie Blount drew bills of exchange on the Government of the United States, to the amount which he borrowed, and which afterwards paid. Henry Drake, a fighting sutler with the 107th New York Infantry, wrote this letter from camp near Dallas, Georgia on June 1, 1864. In it, he details his unit's march to their current location and recounts their subsequent battles with Confederate soldiers. The letter also describes the death of Drake's fellow soldier and friend Will E. Vanauken, who Drake says he may have loved and thought too much of. Also included is an undated photograph of Drake.

Skelton is unable to perform the duties of a soldier in the 27th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. He was examined by Army Surgeon A. Wright, who found that he had two separate wounds. The first was a break in his left arm inflicted on May 7, 1862 during the Battle of Shiloh. The second was an injury to his right shoulder (which fractured the shoulder blade) that he received...
