Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

An indenture for Andrew Glave, an enslaved man, to Mordecai Lewis of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania dated October 15, 1794. At the bottom of the document is an added handwritten note by Joseph Lewis, dated December 20, 1800, stating that Andrew Gray is granted his freedom.

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection: This 117-page book is filled with woodblock illustrations and Japanese calligraphy. Most pages have approximately 70% text but there are several two-page illustrations at the back of the book depicting the process of making fabric. Other illustrations feature a joust, a procession, a tea ceremony, dancing, and many activities of daily life. There are also figures that resemble a Mancala game board and origami folds. William Wertenbaker on Edgar Allan Poe, 1869 January

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

This collection includes a reproduction of a handwritten page by William Wertenbaker in 1869 about his time with Edgar Allan Poe at the University of Virginia in 1826. Wertenbaker comments on Poe's temperament and work as a student. At the end of the writing, Wertenbaker includes a brief list of the books Poe borrowed from the library during the semester. The letter in this collection is not an original.
