Chief Nunna Hi-Diha Pathkiller Letter

Abstract

This appeal bond on behalf of Cherokee Chief Nunna Hi-Diha Pathkiller was signed by Return J Meigs III, Pathkiller’s acting attorney. The material included in the collection is an appeal bond to the Supreme Court at Knoxville. The case was a contest over the title to lands settled by the Blair Family in what is now Loudon, Tennessee. Ultimately, the courts sided with the Blair Family.

Edward Gunter Agreement with James W. McClung

Abstract This contract, made between Edward Gunter (agent of John Ross, principal chief of the Cherokee nation) and James W. McClung, binds McClung to represent any Cherokee in any suit brought in several Alabama counties, the district court in Huntsville, or the Supreme Court of the United States. This agreement was made preparatory to the Cherokee testing the constitutionality of Alabama extending jurisdiction over Cherokee territory. McClung is to be paid $500 per annum for his services. James Sevier Letter

This document is a typed copy of a letter that James Sevier wrote to L. C. Draper on August 19, 1839. In it, Sevier discusses his and his father's service on the Appalachian frontier during the Revolutionary War, where they fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain and in several smaller campaigns against the Cherokee. He also briefly recounts conflicts between Native Americans and white people in the decade following the American victory.
