Sgt. William A. Smith Letter to J. O. Jones

Abstract

A letter was written by Sgt. William A. Smith, Co. B 71 Ind. 6th Cav., on October 5, 1863. He talks about Union occupation north of Knoxville, TN and the increased price of goods and foods in the Confederate states as oppsosed to the Union. He also writes about a brigade of women marching and carrying the U.S. flag. The letter was submitted to Mr. J. O. Jones, postmaster of Terre Haute, Indiana, in hopes that he could get it published in the local newspaper.

Abstract This collection contains delicate sheet music for 41 pieces from the 1840s to the 1870s, which previously belonged to Anna A. Newton and William A. Peal. Some of the composers include Stephen C. Foster, Francis H. Brown, H. P. Danks, Harrison Millard, Charles Carroll Sawyer, and Gilles Jullien. Shiloh Baptist Church Minutes

Agnes B. Maddox typed these 28 pages from the only written copy of the Shiloh Baptist Church's minutes in 1964. The manuscript begins with an index of members, noting whether they are deceased, dismissed, or excluded. The minutes themselves begin on May 26, 1821 with Bird Deatherage appointed moderator and Abner Deatherage clerk. These pages are photocopies of the original typewritten documents.

The Ship's Passenger Log, 1864, consists of a list of passengers on different voyages of one ship, instructions on keeping lists of passengers, and a ledger of passage dues. Passengers listed include William Cullen Bryant and William G. Brownlow. There is also a photograph of an unknown man.
