In this August 30, 1844, letter to William Brownlow, publisher of The Whig newspaper, John Bell, then Secretary of War, discusses his support of Henry Clay in 1839.

This collection consists of a letter from John M. Lea to William G. Brownlow, Governor of Tennessee. Lea briefly introduces his recommendation of H. G. Smith as Judge of the Supreme Court and refers Brownlow to a full letter of recommendation originally enclosed with this letter.

In this letter, John S. McNutt solicits support from Colonel John C. Gaut for his candidacy for Attorney General. McNutt wants Gaut to persuade local citizens to support his candidacy as well.

In this circular, John Sevier calls for the state legislature to convene on Monday, July 23, in order to act upon a resolution made by the general assembly in respect to the election of the president and vice president. It is signed by John Sevier.

Agriculturalist J. B. Killebrew wrote this two-volume autobiography in 1896 and 1898. Volume one begins with an account of Killebrew's ancestry, describes his life from birth to the Atlanta Exposition (1881), and closes with an appendix containing more genealogical information. Volume two begins in 1882, chronicles Killebrew's life through 1897, and closes with an article from Harper's written by Martha M. Williams.

This small circular announces Butler's re-election bid for sheriff of Claiborne County, Tennessee and requests that the Republicans choose him at the primary on May 23. His appeal is based on the Republican custom of giving officials a second term and on his financial record during his first term.

Judge Barclay Martin writes to Tennessee's governor William G. Brownlow concerning the possible vacancy of the 16th Circuit judgeship. Martin is recommending E. G. Hill, Esquire for the position.

A single handwritten letter dated August 26, 1868 to the Honorable W. G. Brownlow, Governor of Tennessee, from Judge J. F. Lauck of Gallatin, TN in reference to a dispute about Lauck's Chancellorship, meetings of the Tennessee Bar Association about him, and injunction brought up against him.

Passmore asks Brownlow's advice on with candidate the Republican party should nominate for governor of Tennessee, given that both support giving former Confederate soldiers back the vote, a policy that Passmore opposes.

This long broadside is addressed To the Freemen of the Third Senatorial District, composed of the counties of Greene, Cocke, Sevier and Blount. In it, Lloyd Bullen addresses the reasons he should be reelected to the Tennessee state senate. Amidst many insults to his opponents, he promises to vote against renewing corrupt bank charters and to abolish the expensive Chancery Courts. He then requests that the voters choose him in the election to be held the following Thursday.

This collection contains a letter signed by Harry, dated June 2, 1862 from Portland, Maine to Sherbrooke, Canada. The letter is addressed to Miss L. A. Hale in care of the Honorable E. Hale. Predominantly a love letter, Harry mentions seeing William G. "Parson" Brownlow speak, calling him vulgar and profane. He also talks of two musical composers of the time - Louis Moreau Gottschalk and Bringnoli.
