David G. Farragut Papers

Abstract

The collection contains extensive correspondence and other material related to the career of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut from 1830-1870. Subsequent materials include correspondence from the Admiral's wife Virginia, his father George, and his son Loyall. This collection also contains genealogical information about the Farragut family as well as newspaper clippings and articles about the Admiral.

This collection contains two letters sent to David Glasgow Farragut while he was serving on the MS Flag Ship Hartford. They are dated 1863 and 1864. The letter dated 1864 concerns the appraisal of a schooner captured by the Estella.

David W. Humphrey Letters

Abstract

This collection houses two letters from David Humphrey (signed D. W. H.) to Julia written from Union Headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee, on November 26 and December 17 of 1862. The letters discuss life in camp, General Rosecrans' good performance, family news, news of the war in Tennessee and Virginia, food being sent by the family to camp, Humphrey's desire to return home, and his love for Julia.

E. H. Rennolds Diaries

E. H. Rennolds maintained these two diaries while he was serving with the 5th Tennessee Infantry (CSA) in 1863 and 1864 during the Civil War. In them, he describes his service in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee, including his participation in the battles of Spring Hill, Franklin, and Nashville.

E. Waldo Stacy Letter

Abstract

This collection contains a letter, dated March 9, 1864 from camp at Mossy Creek, Tenn., from E. Waldo Stacy of the 36th Massachusetts Infantry. The letter details the events of February 23-March 9, 1864. Stacy and his regiment advanced to Strawberry Plains before withdrawing to Mossy Creek (now Jefferson City). He describes an encounter with a drunken rebel lieutenant.

This letter was written on December 25-27, 1863, in Blains Cross Roads, Tenn., by Assistant Surgeon Edward Lynn of the 65th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, to his sister. In the letter, Lynn writes of the Siege of Knoxville and the Battle of Fort Sanders, as well as on meeting Parson William Brownlow.

This collection consists of a letter from Union Sgt. Edward Summers, Co. B. Kentucky Calvary Regiment, to his cousin Arthur Johnson on November 2, 1863. Summers gives a detailed account of his unit's movements following his enlistment on October 21, 1861 at Louisville, Ky., including involvement in the Battle of Chickamauga.

Elijah A. Hawn Papers

Abstract

This collection contains six letters of personal correspondence between Elijah Hawn and his wife Nancy dated from May 26, 1862 through June 16, 1863. Also included are form no. 79 from the U.S. Treasury Department (which allows for Nancy to be granted a widow’s pension), a letter from the Department of the Interior rejecting her widow’s pension on the grounds that she remarried, and a division of land agreement.

Elizabeth Baker Crozier Journal

Abstract In this journal, Elizabeth (Baker) Crozier describes life in Knoxville during the siege of 1863. She recounts Union troops plundering and burning her home as well as destroying the homes of her friends and neighbors. She also recalls the kindness of others as she and her husband attempted to reestablish a home and life for their family. In a small excerpt at the end, Crozier also writes of the death of her brother, Dr. Henry Baker, at the hands of Union troops. This document is a typewritten...
