Jacob Rowland Letters

Abstract This collection consists of two letters from Union soldier Jacob Rowland to his sister, Olive. The first letter, dated January 26, 1865, is sent from Knoxville, Tenn., where Rowland reports of "...quiet times here in Knoxville just now occasionally review as inspection we moved our camp last Tuesday. James B. David Diary

Abstract

This collection houses the diary of Private James B. David of the 89th Illinois Infantry Regiment. The diary documents entire year of 1864, but it only has a few references for the months of November and December. The first pages of the diary list the addresses of some of the soldiers who served with David.

James Pritchard Letter

Abstract

In this letter written from Waverly, Tenn., and dated February 16, 1864, James E. Pritchard of the 8th Iowa Cavalry writes to his brother John. He comments that the "Rebels will never regain a hold on East Tennessee," noting that in Waverly, 300 Confederates surrendered and took the oath of allegiance.

This collection consists of a letter from Jethro Hill, dated February 3, 1864, sent from Lenoir's Station, Tennessee, to Jodie. Hill describes a brief battle and his good living conditions. He also asks for news of the family and wonders why Jodie hasn't responded to his previous letters.

John D. Messinger Letter

Abstract

John D. Messinger wrote this letter to his friend E. Smith Woodworth from Pulaski, Tennessee on November 20, 1864. In it, Messinger discusses Lincoln's victory in the recent presidential election and Confederate troop movements in Tennessee. He also expresses his hope that the Union will soon win the war so that he can return home.

John E. Thompson Letter and Poem

Abstract

This collection consists of a letter and a poem written by John Edward Thompson of the 20th Illinois Infantry. The letter, written on March 17, 1862 to a friend while Thompson was stationed in Savannah, Tennessee, discusses Thompson's thoughts on surviving the war and on arriving in Savannah. The poem, entitled Good Night: Who Wouldn't be a Soldier and written before the Battle of Shiloh, was published in the Advocate in 1887.

John Ibaugh Civil War Diary

In this diary, John Ibaugh writes primarily of his movements between Philadelphia and Washington D.C. during the closing months of the Civil War. He also describes his service at the Battle of Nashville, the Battle of Chattanooga, and the Union Army's final march in Washington, D.C.

John Jones Papers

This collection houses correspondence, notes, official papers, and other materials documenting John Jones' work as a quartermaster stationed at Fort Donelson, Tennessee during the Civil War. Of particular interest are the items showing the Court of Inquiry that investigated and later acquitted Jones of horse theft.

John M. Hollis Papers

The diary housed in this collection documents John M. Hollis's Civil War service, including his enlistment and training and his unit's marches through Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky. Of particular interest are the descriptions of fierce battles at Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Perryville, Kentucky.

John M. Kelly Diary and Other Materials

Abstract This collection consists primarily of the 110-page diary that John M. Kelly kept while serving with the 141st New York Infantry Regiment. In it, he speaks of the weather conditions, his activities, and troop movements, including his unit's march south to join General Ulysses S. Grant's forces in Chattanooga and their later participation in Major General William T. Sherman's campaigns in the Carolinas. Also included are two pension certificates. John Scott Letter

Abstract

In this letter from Lieutenant Colonel John Scott, he claims Colonel Nelson G. Williams of the 3rd Iowa Regiment incorrectly and maliciously reported Second Lieutenant Benton A. Mathews, Second Lieutenant Ole A. Anderson, and Lieutenant Colonel Mathew M. Trumbull of Company D as well as Captain Emilius I. Weiser of Company I as deserters. Scott calls for an investigation so that these men, who had been wounded and served valiantly, might have their records corrected.

John W. Hammer Letter

Abstract

While encamped in the Cumberland Ford area of Knox County, Tenn., John W. Hammer serving in the 16th Ohio Infantry Company K writes to a friend named Annie. In this letter dated June 4, 1862, he describes the fortifications that are in place to protect them from the Confederates. His company moves toward the Confederate camps and skirmishes occur.

The Boyd Letters contains six letters written by Joseph E. Boyd of the 115th Illinois Volunteer Infantry between September 1862 and January 1864. These letters describe Union military camp conditions, the environment of Tennessee, Union soldiers' viewpoints regarding the war and Confederates, battles and military operations in Middle and East Tennessee, and the family concerns of Union soldiers.

Joseph C. Read Civil War Collection

This collection contains the official and personal documents of Joseph C. Read through his Union Army military career in the Civil War and subsequent retirement in Fernandina, Florida. Read, during the war, rose from the rank of Sergeant to Brevet Colonel, supplied General Sherman’s siege of Atlanta, as well as partook in many of the major battles in the South during the Civil War.
