Abstract

This collection contains the official and personal documents of Joseph C. Read through his Union Army military career in the Civil War and subsequent retirement in Fernandina, Florida. Read, during the war, rose from the rank of Sergeant to Brevet Colonel, supplied General Sherman’s siege of Atlanta, as well as partook in many of the major battles in the South during the Civil War.

Levi Dysinger Correspondence

Abstract

This collection consists of correspondence from Levi Dysinger, a Union soldier, to his wife Harriet in Paulding County, Ohio. The letters are written from Huntsville, Alabama and date from March to May of 1865. They recount how Private Dysinger's brothers, Henry and Isaac, contracted (and eventually died from) measles while soldiers.

In a March 7, 1869 letter to Nevada Senator William Morris Stewart, Ohio Representative Martin Foran stresses his moderate political stance since the conclusion of the Civil War, citing Tennessee Senator William G. Matthew A. Cowden and George A. Gammon Letters

Abstract

This collection houses several letters written by Union soldier Matthew A. Cowden to his family in Pennsylvania and by Confederate soldier George A. Gammon. Cowden's letters illustrate the hardships of being a soldier, his longing for home, and his confidence in the Union Army's ability to defeat the Confederates. Gammon's letter shows an extreme hatred for the Union Army and speculates on movement of the Confederate Army in the coming days.
