Crockett's diary entries begin on June 10, 1846, the date Crockett mustered into the U.S. Army Cavalry by General Brazelton in Knoxville. His unit then marched through Tennessee to Memphis, took the steamboat “Sea Bird" to New Orleans, then traveled on to Galveston, Texas, marching through Corpus Christi to Brownsville and then Matamoros, Mexico. A single Index Rerum book, or Index of Subjects, intended as "a manual to aid the student and professional man in preparing himself for usefulness." This third edition book was written by Reverend John Todd, Pastor of the Edwards Church of Northampton, and published by J.H. Butler in 1836. An unidentified author has used the volume as a commonplace book recording books read and passages of interest.
