Charles Christensen Letter, 1862 February 21
This collection contains a February 21, 1862, letter from Civil War soldier Charles Christensen, camped at Cairo, Illinois, to Richard Morris of Cedar Lake Wisconsin. Christensen, a member of the 8th Wisconsin, discusses his regiment, Union victories at Forts Donelson and Henry, Confederate General Lloyd Tilghman, possible rebel attacks at Cairo, the overpopulation of prisoners of war, as well as personal family matters.

This 100 page diary was written by Frank M. Renshaw who served on the USS Judge Torrence of the United States Navy in 1862. All entries are of excellent quality, but the most interesting are those from March to November that tell of the Battles of Plum Run Bend and Memphis, as well as early bombardments of Fort Pillow, Vicksburg, and the capture of Confederate ships.
This collection also includes an 1871 photograph of seven unidentified men and an 1877 railroad pass.

Samuel Martin Letter, 1849 January 25
This collection contains a letter from Samuel Martin of Campbell's Station, Tenn. to Hamilton Fish, Governor of New York, dated January 25, 1849. In the letter, Martin expresses concern about the possibility of slavery being kept from expanding. An enslaver, Martin defended the institution. He also discusses his desire to create a canal from the Dismal Swamp Canal in North Carolina around to the Mississippi and the need for a National Agricultural School.
