Joseph C. Strong Journals, 1800-1801, 1816

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection: The first of the journals in this collection recounts Joseph C. Strong's service in the U. S. Navy aboard the warship Trumbull as it escorted other ships from London to the Caribbean in 1800 and 1801. It tells of capturing ships, taking prisoners, and relieving them of their money. It also mentions eating a tasty fruit called Mamgeneele that turned out to be poisonous. Strong's tour was cut short because Thomas Jefferson was elected president and a Treaty of Peace was signed between the U.S....

S. D. Cabaniss created this list to document the expenses that Martha Allen incurred during her trip to and from Lexington to visit her daughter Virginia Allen at Elk River. The majority of the charges are for lodging and pikeage, but several document such purchases as a pair of boots for the driver, a Bible for Virginia Allen, and several articles of clothing.

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection: A letter from James Crokatt to a "Mr. Smyth" dated May 6, 1761. Crockatt wrote this letter to someone he was representing in negotiations for a possible purchase from Mrs. Dick. Crokatt believed that she had trifled too long and expected more than the purchase was worth, so he advised his employer to withdraw the offer. He then mentioned that Colonel Grant was nearing Fort Prince George in the Cherokee nation and predicted that the entire conquest of North America will be completed this...

Nancy Miller Deposition, 1799 February 15

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

Nancy Miller gave this deposition to Charles McClung, Court Clerk of Knox County, as part of a lawsuit between Judith Miller (plaintiff) and John Smith (defendant). In it, Nancy Miller testifies that in 1798 Zachary Cox told her to get the money that he owed her from his store and that he would tell John Smith to let her have what she asked. The case was heard before the Knox County Superior Court on April 2, 1800, and Judith Miller was awarded $77.39, including $0.16 in court costs.

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

One side of this item bears a letter from Felix Grundy to Andrew Jackson asking about Grundy's conduct over the issues of nullification and secession during the last session of Congress.
