W. B. Lewis Letter

Abstract

In this letter, W. B. Lewis relates news about several friends and family members, mentions that cholera is still afflicting Nashville and the surrounding areas, asks Jackson to pass some news to Ralph E. W. Earl, and complains that [t]imes in Nashville are exceedingly dull and hard. He closes by asking after General Eaton (who he thinks should come to Nashville because the Foster and Grundy parties are waxing very hot) and sending his respects to Jackson's family.

W. C. Cochran Photographs of the Great Smoky Mountains

W. C. Cochran took these 89 photographs during August and September of 1886. The majority of the images depict areas that were later incorporated into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park including Chilhowee Range, Nebo Mountain, and Miller's Cove.

W. D. Carnes Letter

W. D. Cox Medical Ledger

Abstract Dr. W. D. Cox, a physician in Lake City, Tennessee, used this ledger to record the names of his patients, the date he treated them, what charges were incurred, and whether payment was rendered in cash or goods. Several additional items were found in the ledger, including a letter from Dr. N. L. French asking Cox to forward information about patients of his that will not pay their debts, a note from Sallie Armstrong requesting that Dr. Cox make a house call on March 12, 1907, and several...

W. Dwight Reinhardt Letter

Abstract

W. Dwight Reinhardt's July 8, 1862 letter to Sarah Blackburn in Yadkin County, North Carolina, discusses that the 23rd Tennessee Regiment (CSA) will soon move from Tupelo, Mississippi into Tennessee. Reinhardt also passes along stories of skirmishes fought by the 4th North Carolina.

W. E. (Bill) Warde Memoir

This collection contains W. E. (Bill) Warde's updated version of his memoir My Military Service which covers the time on the front lines in the European Theater (1944-1946). He recounts his experiences in various battles and gives details about the movements of his unit and what he describes as the "worst night of his life," when some of his fellow soldiers were captured and killed in Germany.

W. E. Gillenwaters Letter

W. G. Brownlow Article

Abstract

William G. Brownlow, publisher and editor of Brownlow’s Knoxville Whig, published this article in his newspaper on June 17, 1868. The piece, titled the "McMinn County Manifesto," refers to two articles published in Samuel P. Ivins’ Athens Post on October 3 and 10, 1862.

W. G. Holmes Letter to S. E. Hunt

Abstract

In this letter to Sarah E. Hunt, W. G. Holmes (business manager of the Memphis Commercial Appeal) describes the history of morning newspapers in Memphis beginning with the foundation of the Appeal in 1840 and ending with the consolidation of the city's two major daily newspapers, the Appeal Avalanche and the Commercial, as the Commercial Appeal in 1894. Holmes closes with an outline of the features that make Memphis an ideal location for a morning newspaper.

W. G. McAdoo Diary

In this diary, W. G. McAdoo describes his service in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), including his company's participation in the invasion of Mexico's eastern coast, the Mexican landscape, his encounters with the local population, troop movements, and the Battle of Vera Cruz (March 1847). W. Gibbs McAdoo Letter

Abstract

This letter penned by W. Gibbs McAdoo, written November 8, 1860, describes the mood in Knoxville, after Abraham Lincoln's election. McAdoo also tells of an incident in which someone tied a tin bucket and a note reading "Going out of the Union" to a dog and turned it loose on Gay Street.

W. H. Rogers Collection

Abstract This collection consists primarily of a journal that W. H. Rogers kept between 1844 and 1848. In it, he discusses his work as a Methodist circuit rider in the southeast, including the places he visits and the people he meets. The blank pages of the book have been used to transcribe a Semi-Centennial Sermon and to record the April 1877 transactions of a local chapter of the American Bible Society. This folder contains the transcript of an interview with W. Lewis Wood, dated 3 August 2002, conducted in Memphis, Tenn., by Kurt Piehler and Nashwa Van Houts of the Veteran's Oral History Project. Wood discusses his childhood in Memphis, his experiences as an engineering student at the University of Tennessee, and his time serving in the US Navy and Army during World War II and the Korean War, respectively.
