This collection houses two letters that Union soldier Watson B. Smith wrote to his mother, Mary Amanda (Birchard) Smith, on September 23, 1863 and October 1, 1863. In them, Smith discusses Union operations in the Knoxville Campaign, life in headquarters, and news from the Battle of Chattanooga.

In them, he discusses the Knoxville Campaign, battles with Confederate troops and guerillas, and dealings with the civilian population, which was mostly (but not entirely) sympathetic to the Union. Welsh Colony Papers

Abstract

William Jones (nephew of Samuel Roberts) collected these papers. He and Richard Roberts were the trustees of Samuel Roberts' will and were entrusted with the responsibility of seeing the land claims through to resolution. Included are copies of documents dealing with original land purchases from E. D. Saxton, maps showing the locations of the purchased tracts, testimonies of William and Richard Edward Jones, and brief accounts of the history of the Welsh Colony written by William Jones.

Wesley Smith Dorris Diary

Abstract

This collection contains the diary of Wesley Smith Dorris, a private in the 30th Tennessee Infantry, Company K. Diary entries date between 1861 and 1863. Some portions, including the beginning pages and cover, are missing. Entries describe the Battle of Fort Henry of 1862, Dorris’ capture, and daily life in prisoner camp.

Wesley T. Kennerly Papers

Abstract The bulk of this collection houses correspondence written to and by W. T. Kennerly between 1891 and 1943. Among his correspondents are the nurses that he met while hospitalized in San Francisco during the Spanish-American War and such political figures as Senators Kenneth McKellar and Tom Stewart and Tennessee governor Prentice Cooper.
