This manuscript contains copies of regimental and brigade general and special orders documenting the activities of the Second Division of the Army of Tennessee under the command of General Grenville Mellen Dodge from 1 January 1863 to 14 January 1864.

The letter is written by Gustavus A. Peltzer, dated July 2, 1863, and is addressed to his friend Ellis. The letter, written in response to previous correspondence from Ellis, details the events that led to his imprisonment in Knoxville, Tennessee. The collection also contains the original envelope used for this correspondence.

This collection consists of a letter from Union solider H. H. Thomas to William G. Brownlow in Knoxville, Tennessee. Thomas congratulates Brownlow on his nomination for governor of Tennessee, praises him as a supporter of the Union, and asks for a position in his administration.

This collection consists of several documents written by members of the Hammonds family of Tennessee. Included are four letters, one list of expenditures, one application for money order, one promise of payment, and one account book. The documents date between 1861 and 1900.

This collection consists of letters that Harry C. Cushing wrote to his mother, father, and friend Ned Atwell while serving in the U.S. Civil War. The letters are written between September 1860 and November 1864 and include the letters that Cushing wrote while stationed in Tennessee from November 1862 to March 1864. Many of these documents provide detailed descriptions of battles as well as witty stories regarding camp life and occasional sketches.

Henry Bechtel of Company E of the 22nd Ohio Infantry wrote this letter to his parents on June 5, 1863 from camp on Haines Bluff in Mississippi. He mentions having recently left Jackson, Tennessee, and traveled through Memphis before approaching Vicksburg, Mississippi.

This is a collection of over fifty civil war letters written by Harry Brown to his wife from August 1861 through September 1862.

This collection houses a letter dated January 25, 1865 from Assistant Inspector General Major Henry Bryan (then stationed in Tombigbee River, Alabama) to Colonel George William Brent documenting the artillery units of the Confederate Army of Tennessee shortly before the Confederate surrender.

Henry Drake, a fighting sutler with the 107th New York Infantry, wrote this letter from camp near Dallas, Georgia on June 1, 1864. In it, he details his unit's march to their current location and recounts their subsequent battles with Confederate soldiers. The letter also describes the death of Drake's fellow soldier and friend Will E. Vanauken, who Drake says he may have loved and thought too much of. Also included is an undated photograph of Drake.

In this diary, Henry Warren describes his service with the 20th Tennessee Infantry Regiment (CSA) in Tennessee and Kentucky. A document signed by Governor Isham G. Harris inside the diary nominates Warren as a Drill Master and orders him to report for duty. Both of these items have been transcribed onto a CD housed with the collection.

In these letters to his sisters (who may have been living in Cleveland, Ohio) George Henry Weeks discusses military movements, describes camp life, sends news of his health, and gives his opinions of the war.

This collection consists of six letters written by Horace Maynard between 1861 and 1873.

This collection contains scrapbooks, speeches, correspondence, photographs, essays, eulogies, and a biography documenting the life and work of Tennessee statesman Horace Maynard. There are a few items of unknown origin, including a deed for 60 acres on the south side of the French Broad River to John Wright signed by Governor William Carroll and two certificates of sale for land in Ohio purchased by Mathew Heuston and signed by President James Madison.

In three letters from 1864 and 1865 to his wife Katy, Hugh Ryan, a private with the 24th Kentucky Infantry, describes the life of a Union soldier at the close of the Civil War.

This collection consists of a report written by Chaplain Ira Fayette Pettibone, then serving with the 74th Regiment of the Illinois Volunteers, in Chattanooga on November 1, 1864.
