Elijah A. Hawn Papers

Abstract

This collection contains six letters of personal correspondence between Elijah Hawn and his wife Nancy dated from May 26, 1862 through June 16, 1863. Also included are form no. 79 from the U.S. Treasury Department (which allows for Nancy to be granted a widow’s pension), a letter from the Department of the Interior rejecting her widow’s pension on the grounds that she remarried, and a division of land agreement.

Harry C. Cushing Letters

Abstract This collection consists primarily of two sets of letters that Harry C. Cushing wrote to his mother, father, and friend Ned Atwell while serving in the U.S. Civil War. The first set of letters is composed of photocopies of original letters held at the Rhode Island Historical Society. The second set are originals written between September 1860 and November 1864 and include the letters that Cushing wrote while stationed in Tennessee from November 1862 to March 1864. Henry Drake Letter and Photograph

Abstract

Henry Drake, a fighting sutler with the 107th New York Infantry, wrote this letter from camp near Dallas, Georgia on June 1, 1864. In it, he details his unit's march to their current location and recounts their subsequent battles with Confederate soldiers. The letter also describes the death of Drake's fellow soldier and friend Will E. Vanauken, who Drake says he may have loved and thought too much of. Also included is an undated photograph of Drake.
