William Conner Letter

This collection consists of a letter dated March 3, 1848 from General William Conner to President James Polk, written from Brownsville, Tennessee. Conner requests the appointment of his son, John Conner, as a captain in the U. S. Army. John was enlisted in the 4th regiment of the Tennessee Volunteers at the time this letter was written.

In an October 25, 1837 letter to J. W. Campbell in Jackson, Tenn., General William Conner, a promoter for the town of Ashport on the Mississippi River, writes of the town's success and future growth. He also tells of finding Native American remains.

William Cosgrove Letter

Abstract

This collection is composed of a letter that William Cosgrove of the 1st Ohio Light Artillery Regiment, Battery G, wrote to his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Bowers, in Mount Vernon (Knox County) Ohio from Nashville, Tennessee on January 31, 1864. He writes of cousin Charles's death in Memphis and his own Battery's move to Nashville. Also, he speaks of conditions in camp, including a recent outbreak of smallpox and his personal troubles with rheumatism.

William D. Cotton Persian Gulf Command Photograph Album

Abstract

This collection is an album of World War II photographs taken by William D. Cotton. He was stationed in Iran as part of the Persian Gulf Command from 1943-1945. The photographs document his tour in Iran as well as travels to surrounding areas including Iraq and Palestine. Along with photos of his fellow officers, there are depictions of local culture, carnivals, and trips he took with friends and colleagues.

William Derris Slide Collection

Abstract

The Derris Slide Collection is solely composed of approximately 4400 slides from the 1940's thru the 1960's of the Great Smoky Mountains region of Tennessee. Mr. William Derris was an amateur photographer and owner of the Derris Motel (later the Laughing Horse Inn) in Townsend, Tennessee, which he photographed at length and used the slides of those photographs in a slide show for the entertainment of his Inn's numerous and varied guests.

William Doherty, James Doherty, and S. Johnson Ledger

Abstract In 1796, William Doherty began using this ledger to keep track of the sales he made in his general store. The items he carried included corn, whiskey, venison, beef, horse feed, fabric (including silk), casket ornaments, and sundries. James Doherty took over his business in 1800 and continued the ledger until February of 1803. The ledger then remained unused until 1870, when an otherwise unknown S. Johnson of Bellefonte (Jackson County) Alabama began using it to keep track of the business...

William E. Bobbitt Memoir

This memoir, written in 1996, is William Bobbitt's account of his time fighting in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
