The collection contains a three page letter, dated April 16, 1863, written by General Mason Brayman, during the Civil War. The letter is in regards to General Brayman's orders against spies and guerrillas in West Tennessee. "All entering the lines must report to Provost Marshall, all trading permits are revoked, all persons not in the service of the U.S. wearing any part of the uniform, will be treated as spies and guerrillas..."

5th Iowa Infantry Letter, 1864 June 24

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

This collection consist of an eight page letter, dated June 24, 1864, written by John S. R. Fellows at Camp Patrick, Tennessee, during the Civil War. In the letter, Fellows writes home to his brothers and sisters about the hanging of 500 Confederate soldiers in Nashville during the Civil War.

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

The collection consists of a letter, dated March 15, 1864, written by Lt. Thomas A. Cobb from Company A of the 10th Indiana Infantry to his father in Chattanooga, Tennessee. On the fourth page of the letter, the Lt. describes what he witnessed in November 1863. In one section he states, "I saw a dead rebel the dogs had pulled him out of the ground where he had been partly buried and had been eating at him!"

Dr. Henry Hayes, an Army physician, wrote this letter to a friend back home in Vermont. In the letter, Dr. Hayes discussed the aftermath of the Fort Pillow Massacre.

Taylor, a widow staying in Yorkville, dated October 1827. It also includes three receipts, one signed by Daniel Mitchell on November 9, 1819 for $9 paid by J. W. McClung for keeping house; one signed by Rufin Morgan on November 26, 1821 for $116.57 from the lawsuit of James Gillespie; and one signed by Sarah A. H. White on December 9, 1847 for $50 from Ruffin Coleman for some business with her...
