The two items in the Colonel Andrew J. Mackay Papers, 1863, demonstrate the type of paperwork received through the quartermaster's office. The collection includes account record pages showing items purchased or not received during February 1863 and a letter dated December 15, 1863 outlining the opening of a new coal mine near Kelly's Landing and the want of supplies in the area.

Colonel Carrick W. Heiskell Letters

Abstract

In these July 1861 letters from Colonel Carrick W. Heiskell to his sister and neice, Heiskell discusses his surroundings and experiences in the Cumberland Gap while serving in the 19th Tennessee Confederate Infantry. Heiskell makes specific note of the mountain area, valleys of Tennessee, and an “abundance of rattlesnakes.” He goes on to discuss his readiness for conflict with the enemy in the days ahead, as well as the desertion of a relative soldier to the enemy.

This collection consists of photographs collected by University of Tennessee student James S. Corbitt. The subjects depicted include the UT campus directly after the Civil War (including the earthworks built for the Battle of Fort Sanders), the 1931 College of Engineering faculty (including Nathan Dougherty and Red Matthews), Ferris Hall, football games on Shields-Watkins Field, and unidentified UT faculty members.

Colonel James F. Rusling Papers

Abstract

This collection consists of 62 documents showing James Rusling's career as Inspector of the Quarter Master Department. Many of these papers concern allegations of fraud in Chattanooga and efforts to reduce supplies and personnel after the Civil War had ended. A few letters concern Rusling's orders and promotions; the rest deal with receipts, personnel, and inventories.

Colonel John T. Lockman Letter

Abstract

This collection consists of a single letter from Colonel John T. Lockman of the 119th New York Infantry to Edward Dewitt in New York, N.Y. The letter, written in diary form, is addressed from near Marietta, Ga. and postmarked from Nashville, Tenn. It chronicles the activities of Lockman's unit from June 22-July 6, 1864.
