Harry C. Cushing Letters

Abstract This collection consists primarily of two sets of letters that Harry C. Cushing wrote to his mother, father, and friend Ned Atwell while serving in the U.S. Civil War. The first set of letters is composed of photocopies of original letters held at the Rhode Island Historical Society. The second set are originals written between September 1860 and November 1864 and include the letters that Cushing wrote while stationed in Tennessee from November 1862 to March 1864. Henry Warren Diary

In this diary, Henry Warren describes his service with the 20th Tennessee Infantry Regiment (CSA) in Tennessee and Kentucky. A document signed by Governor Isham G. Harris inside the diary nominates Warren as a Drill Master and orders him to report for duty. Both of these items have been transcribed onto a CD housed with the collection.

Horace Maynard Papers

Abstract

This collection contains scrapbooks, speeches, correspondence, photographs, essays, eulogies, and a biography documenting the life and work of Tennessee statesman Horace Maynard. There are a few items of unknown origin, including a deed for 60 acres on the south side of the French Broad River to John Wright signed by Governor William Carroll and two certificates of sale for land in Ohio purchased by Mathew Heuston and signed by President James Madison.

Isabel Belle Scott of Gratiot, Wisconsin wrote this letter to her brother James, who was then serving with Company B of the 23rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, on 15 February 1863. This collection houses a letter written by J. B. Rodgers sent on March 1, 1863 from Washington D.C. to Harry Studley of Illinois. This collection consists of an April 11, 1864, letter from Union soldier J. C. Gates in Ringgold, Georgia. Writing to his wife in Ohio, Gates mentions the arrival of Col. J. P. Hollowell Letter

J. P. Hollowell wrote this letter to his sister, Sallie Hollowell, from camp in Bowling Green, Kentucky. In it, he mentions that his unit has been looking for a fight, but their location is too well fortified. Hollowell also apologizes for not being home for Christmas and says that he wants a new pair of pants.
